13 RULES TO MAKE A GREAT WITCH HOUSE SONG
"13 rules to make a great witch house song"
by travis egedy
1. dont listen to any "witch house". create from your inner witch.
2. eat pomegranate. a lot. and use your hands to separate the seeds from the outer skin, dont buy pre separated seeds.
3. study the "your body" video by psychic TV, and the essays "T.A.Z", "sorcery", and "immediatism" by Hakim Bey, and "thee splinter test" by genesis P. orridge.
4. fuck. a lot.
5. take MDMA and go to a strip club.
6. keep onyx with you at all times, keep citrine in the the space where you create, travel with moonstone, and give the gift of jade to someone special.
7. scent yourself with oils, stay away from pesticides, and find a shade of lipstick that suits your face.
8. do graffiti.
9. have fun, stop to smell the roses, and frolic in a fucking sunny meadow.
10. quit your job.
11. listen to DJ nate.
12. understand you have been lied to your whole life. and that nothing is permanent.
13. FEEL.
(written for croatian magazine ZNAKI, who wanted to "understand what makes a great witch house song")

ERYONEZ TALKINGZ ABOUT WITCH HOUSE
it seems that my conceptual half-joke genre WITCH HOUSE is here to stay. i had always wanted to invent a catchphrase or some sort of meme within popular (sub)culture, the idea of naming a genre stemmed from a failed conceptual art piece from 2007 where i attempted to start a certain "movement" called CREEP (read my "creep" manifesto on my myspace blog) , whereas "creep" was a "state of being", witch house was a comment about aesthetics.
with a genuine interest in the occult and magic, i incorporate a lot of my magical practice within the artworks that i make (this includes my music), and originally "witch house" was supposed to serve as a name for thee all to rarely explored style of magikal house music. a style first explored in depth by true witch house originators, PSYCHIC TV. (not dj screw) (get learned)
music is and will always be magikal, as it invokes change and transformation within our physical internal and external reality. and that should be at the core of what "witch house" is if anything. putting on some dark clothes and putting a bunch of upside down crosses next to your band name means nothing if all it serves to you is to "look cool". the "witch" in "witch house" is not an empty word. I AM A FUCKING WITCH, BITCH.
now, it seems that there is a genuine intellectual interest in what is happening within this whole aesthetic synchronicity known as witch house, and for good reason. music is always a reflection of what is happening within the current consciousness of human beings, especially progressive musics. and witch house is no exception. something is going on. we are evolving. REMEMBERING the ancient ways as we shift into the next age. to coin the god terrence mckenna, an "archaic revival" is underfoot within our contemoprary technological existence. witch house could have only come about through that magical organic entity known as the internet, where all information is ready to be accessed. especially that within art, culture and music, of which witch house is a alchemical brew of multiple styles, sounds, movements, and genres. it represents our current pop cultural landscape far better than someone like katy perry.
could witch house be a manifestation of people starting to understand what had been occulted for thousands of years? are we modern day pagans? maybe i putting to much on this, but it is interesting stuff to think about.
here are some recent thoughts on "witch house"
(and i would love to know your thoughts on what is going on too, any emergent phenomena is fascinating to me, and "witch house" is no exception.)

SOME FAVORITES (BEST OF 2009)
In no particular order:
10. Genesis P-Orridge: 30 Years Of Being Cut Up
A thirty-year retrospective of P-Orridge's photo montage and collage "cut up" work. Beginning with pieces made during his/her collaborative relationship with Brion Gysin in the 70s to the successful alchemical fusion of body and mind with performance artist Lady Jaye Breyer, the exhibition was an incredible window into the mind and soul of an original and unorthodox genius. Truly sick.
9. Small Black
I was lucky enough to meet and play two shows with these dudes, and they blew me away. They sound like some sort of alternative cool kid house party that takes place in a movie from the 90s. A house party where everything goes right, you get the girl and jump in the pool with all your clothes on. Like the video for the Smashing Pumpkins' "1979".
8. Narwhalz (of Sound) at SXSW 2009
"If you hate someone in the art book store, you punch them in the fucking face!" This is real life. A true chaos magician. What life is all about. Puking on an art tour.
7. "Witch House"
2009 was the beginning of the "witch house" style. Also known as "black house" or "occult house." Coined and popularized by SHAMS and myself, two practitioners and advocators of the witch house movement. Mark our words, 2010 will be straight up witchy. Check the fabulously dark "In Your Eyes" by Denver/Amsterdam band Modern Witch, "Pillow Talk" by SHAMS, or the music video for "Goth Star" for examples of the witch house aesthetic.
6. Tearist
Bleeding over the lines of performance art and proto industrial dark wave while sounding totally fresh, unique, and mysterious, Tearist are in a world of their own creation. Its not goth, its not industrial, its just (white) magic. Probably my favorite band out right now. What up Los Angeles!
5. Wierd Records
I was just in New York chillin' with SHAMS and found myself in a dark basement bar filled with fog, a single red light, and cool creepy people dancing to all sorts of obscure cold wave minimal synth music. The night is put on every week by Wierd Records. Wierd puts out records of amazing bands like LED ER EST and Xeno and Oaklander, and seem to be at the cutting edge of the next wave of dark minimal synth bands. Seriously some true underground and wicked shit.
4. Katy Perry: "I Kissed a Girl (Rusko Chapstick Mix)"
I am not really a Katy Perry fan (I don't know anything about her, or care really), but Rusko is my shit. Something about this remix is so now. Pop and rap work so well over dubstep, in 2010 shit is going to sound like this on the radio here in America. Guaranteed. And I'm excited.
3. House of Ladosha: "Burning Like Paris"
Queer sex positive gender smashing crunk rap? Sign me up please. This shit is CULT. "Up in the club like a motherfucking cunt." What's up New York! The revolution is near.
2. Denver Bands/People
BDRMPPL, Alphabets, Josephine and the Mousepeople, Hideous Men, Hollagramz, Tit Wrench Crew, Sonic Bonk, Rhinoceropolis, and many many others... you are family and inspiration. Thanks for an amazing year.
1. HEALTH
Getting to go on two tours in 2009 with these dudes was an incredible experience. I have never met a more dedicated and professional band who are so true to a vision and yet so humble and down to earth. I owe a lot to these guys. Watching them blow minds consistently night after night was something I wont soon forget. One of the best bands doing it right now. They are going to drop a dark side. Watch. Splash!
